Deliberate sandbox murder; disguises and staged accidents replace noisy shootouts.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin follows the first game and refines the recipe that turned the Hitman brand into a synonym for deliberate sandbox murder: playing the bald hitman Agent 47, the player gets expansive levels full of side paths, disguises, and ways to remove a target so it looks like an accident. The key mechanic is the disguise and notoriety system - every action has consequences, loud gunfire raises the guards' attention, while a quiet escape into a gardener's or monk's costume opens other paths to the target. Witnesses notice suspicious behavior, dead bodies must be hidden, and an arsenal of traps, poisons, and improvised weapons encourages a creative approach to elimination. The levels take the player to Sicily, St. Petersburg, Japan, and Malaysia, and each mission can be completed in dozens of different ways, giving the game unusually high replayability.

On PC, the game ran on an improved version of the first title's engine, with noticeably better graphics, character animations, and smarter guard behavior that reacted to the player's actions more convincingly than the competition at the time. The atmosphere was rounded out by Jesper Kyd's iconic musical score, which lent the missions tension and melancholy alike and became an integral part of the whole brand's identity. Contemporary reactions praised above all the freedom of approach and depth of planning, although the game also kept an uncompromising difficulty and somewhat clunky shooting, which it balanced with a slower, tactical pace of play. The PC version also suffered from a more limited save system, forcing players to plan their progress far more carefully than in later entries in the series.

Hitman 2 cemented the formula the series would develop over the next two decades, and it still stands today as a showcase of how to give the player genuine freedom in solving an objective without funneling them toward a single correct path. It also helped establish sandbox murder as a recognized genre in its own right, not just an offshoot of action games. For fans of the stealth genre it remains a defining milestone and the starting point from which all later entries, including the 2016 reboot, branch off.

Why play it: For fans of the stealth genre, Hitman 2 is a defining milestone that showed how to give the player genuine freedom in completing an objective without a single correct path.
