Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain moves the series into an open world – playing as the scarred Venom Snake, the player plans and carries out military operations in Afghanistan and later East Africa, building and expanding his own private army at the floating Mother Base between missions. The core of the game remains stealth – spotting patrols, using terrain, disguises, and improvised decoys to draw enemies away – but the open world allows a much freer approach to objectives than the earlier linear entries, including nighttime movement, vehicles, and companions such as the dog D-Dog or the silent sniper Quiet. The system for recruiting captured enemies at Mother Base further links the individual missions into one ongoing economic and personnel cycle.
The game ran on the proprietary Fox Engine, which on PC delivered excellent technical execution with high frame-rate stability, detailed textures, and convincing weather and time-of-day modeling, making it one of the best-handled technical ports of a major Japanese production of its time. The atmosphere was rounded out by Ludvig Forssell's score together with a selection of licensed period songs the player could listen to via a cassette player, and the overall tone combined military realism with the series' typically Kojima-esque contemplativeness and dark humor. Critically the game was received as one of the best stealth sandboxes of its generation, though the story side remained unfinished – a planned third chapter was cut, leaving the game to end without full narrative closure.
Phantom Pain is also the last entry Hideo Kojima directed for the Metal Gear Solid series before leaving Konami, which is part of why it holds a special, almost symbolic place in the genre's history. To this day it's played as a demonstration of how to spread systemic stealth gameplay across an open world without losing tension and depth, and many of its game systems have become a reference point for later open-world action games.
Why play: For the symbolic status of the last entry directed by Hideo Kojima, and as a demonstration of how to spread systemic stealth gameplay across an open world without losing tension.
