Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 is set on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara, inspired by Cuba, where dictator Antón Castillo longs to restore the country's former glory using Viviro, a drug made from tobacco, even at the cost of violently suppressing resistance. Playing as Dani Rojas, with a choice of male or female appearance, the player joins the Libertad guerrilla movement and liberates the island from military dictatorship using improvised weaponry - including so-called supremo weapons, portable backpacks capable of unleashing rocket barrages or an electric pulse. For the first time, the series ventured into a genuinely real-world-inspired setting rather than a purely fictional one, offering varied scenery from rainy plantations to urban districts. Castillo, in this installment, was voiced and physically portrayed by actor Giancarlo Esposito, whose calmly delivered yet all the more menacing monologues rank among the game's most powerful moments.
The game expands crafting with guerrilla improvised weapons assembled from everyday objects, such as nails, cans, or old circular saws turned into lethal tools, and adds a system of so-called amigos - animal companions including the crocodile Guapo or a wheelchair-bound dog named Chorizo. In terms of gameplay, it follows on from its predecessors' open world, but with greater emphasis on homemade weaponry and guerrilla-style combat. Development was handled by Ubisoft Toronto in collaboration with other studios within the group.
Far Cry 6 was received rather mixed - praised for Giancarlo Esposito's performance as Castillo, the scope of the game world, and the atmosphere of a Caribbean island full of music and colorful neighborhoods, criticized for not bringing a more pronounced shift compared to previous entries and for leaning on mechanics already well-known from the third or fourth games. Within the main numbered series it stands, for now, as the latest entry, symbolically closing a narrative arc begun almost two decades earlier, before the Far Cry brand ventured beyond the traditional open world.
Why play it: For Giancarlo Esposito's acting performance and the atmosphere of a Caribbean island full of music and color, even though it's more a dignified, symbolic close to the series than a major innovation.
