Closes out the handheld trilogy based on DKC3; Kiddy Kong crushes enemies with his body weight.

Donkey Kong Land III closes out the handheld trilogy inspired by the Donkey Kong Country series, this time drawing on the third console installment. The main duo becomes Dixie Kong and little Kiddy Kong, who set out to find the lost Donkey and Diddy Kong across varied environments ranging from swamps and forests to factory complexes full of machinery and conveyor belts. Kiddy Kong brings his own gameplay mechanics based on strength and bouncing, able to throw Dixie a greater distance and crush certain types of enemies with his body weight, complementing Dixie's hovering ability.

The game further develops what worked well in the series' previous Game Boy entries: original level design instead of simply copying the console original, a range of bonus levels, and collectibles that unlock extra content, including hidden map areas. The grayscale visuals rank among the best Rare ever showed on the original Game Boy, with detailed backgrounds, layered environments, and smooth animation for both playable characters. The music continues the series' melodic tradition, adapted to the handheld's sound capabilities, and switches nicely between calmer and more action-packed passages.

At launch, the game confirmed the series' reputation as a reliable, content-rich platformer for travel, even though it arrived at a time when player attention was starting to shift to the newly released Game Boy Color. Today it is prized above all by Donkey Kong Country fans as a demonstration of just how far Rare managed to push the original Game Boy's hardware toward the end of its life cycle. As the final chapter of the trilogy, it offers the most mature level design and finely tuned interplay between its two characters, making it a fitting, dignified conclusion to the whole handheld series — one that deserves attention beyond the shadow of its more famous console counterparts, while still keeping a character all its own.
