A dark, horror-tinged licensed game by Probe Software; its atmosphere set it apart from cheerful GB titles.

Alien 3 for Game Boy is an action platformer from Probe Software, based on the Alien film trilogy, specifically its third, darker installment set on a prison planet. The player takes on the role of Ellen Ripley, moving through the dark corridors of a prison complex infested with Xenomorphs, collecting weapons and equipment, and facing enemies that often appear suddenly from the shadows or ventilation shafts. The gameplay combines shooting, platforming, and a tense horror atmosphere, setting the game apart from most of the cheerier licensed titles that typically came out for the Game Boy at the time.

The rendering on the monochrome display makes good use of contrast between light and shadow to evoke the claustrophobic, dark atmosphere of the film, and despite the handheld's technical limitations, the developers managed to preserve a sense of threat and isolation. The level design emphasizes cautious progress and managing ammunition and health, similar to console versions of Alien 3 released around the same time on other platforms. The sound design relies on sparse, tense sound effects rather than melodic tracks, which nicely supports the horror-driven, nervous tone of the whole game.

Given its more violent and darker themes, Alien 3 was an exception in the Game Boy lineup of the time, which was usually aimed at a younger audience and cheerier, more colorful subjects. Contemporary reception was mixed to positive; the game was praised for its atmosphere, though some criticized its higher difficulty and lack of clarity in its darker sections. Today it's interesting as an example of the fact that even the Game Boy produced darker, atmosphere-focused titles, and fans of sci-fi horror will find in it a grimly toned piece of handheld history that wasn't afraid to break from the era's usual, cheerier mainstream and offer players a genuinely tense experience.
