Wizards & Warriors X: Fortress of Fear
Wizards & Warriors X: Fortress of Fear is an action platformer from Rare that launched a Game Boy spin-off of the Wizards & Warriors series known from the NES. The player takes on the role of the knight Kuros, making his way through a sprawling fortress full of enemies, traps, and puzzle elements, collecting keys and items needed to progress, and fighting a variety of foes with a sword and secondary weapons such as throwing daggers or magic scrolls. Compared to the more action-focused NES entries, the game places greater emphasis on exploration, gradually unlocking the way through the fortress, and managing limited health and item resources.
The visual presentation is, like many of Rare's early Game Boy titles, meticulous, with detailed backgrounds, elaborately textured fortress walls, and readable sprites despite the constraints of the monochrome display. The level design combines linear progression with metroidvania-style elements, requiring the player to return to previously visited parts of the fortress with newly acquired abilities or items in order to advance further. The music complements the game's darker, fantasy atmosphere and belongs among the understated but effective tracks typical of early Game Boy titles, nicely underscoring the feeling of a lonely trek through the fortress.
The game came out in the Game Boy's early years and represented one of the more ambitious titles of its time, one that wasn't content with a simple action concept but instead offered a more elaborate level structure and a slower, more deliberate pace. Contemporary reception was solid, though the game never reached the popularity of the main NES series and remained a relatively niche affair. Today it is of interest chiefly to fans of Rare's early work and as a demonstration of how, already in the early nineties, developers were experimenting with less linear design on a handheld then dominated mostly by simple arcade conversions lacking any deeper connection between individual levels.
