Asterix
Asterix for Game Boy is a platformer from the French studio Infogrames, based on the popular comic about the Gaulish warrior and his friend Obelix. Playing as Asterix, the player moves through levels inspired by the comic book stories, fights Roman legionaries with his fists and a magic potion that temporarily grants him superhuman strength and resilience, and collects menhirs, boar meat, and other items typical of the series. The gameplay is straightforward, built around platforming movement, item collecting, and battles against waves of enemies that block the player's path at regular intervals.
Infogrames managed to bring the distinctive visual style of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's comic to the Game Boy's small screen as well; the characters are easily recognizable by their signature shapes, and the environments reference classic scenes from the comic albums, from the Gaulish village with its thatched huts to Roman military camps. The controls are simple and accessible, which allowed the game to appeal to younger players and comic fans who were just getting into video games and looking for an undemanding entry point into the genre. The music is lighthearted and nicely complements the source material's humorous tone, typical of the whole comic series.
In the European context, where Asterix is an extraordinarily popular character with a long tradition, the game found its audience and ranked among the more popular licensed titles for the Game Boy on the old continent. Outside Europe it remained a rather niche affair due to the character's lower recognition and the lack of a broader release. Today the game is of interest mainly to comic fans and collectors of European Game Boy titles, who will appreciate its faithful transfer of the album's atmosphere into game form and its undemanding but enjoyable gameplay, well suited even for short gaming sessions on the go — exactly as Game Boy publishers of the time envisioned it.
