Brings DKC2 from the SNES to the Game Boy; Dixie can float over pits using her ponytail.

Donkey Kong Land 2 picks up where the first game left off, this time bringing to the Game Boy content inspired by Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest from the Super Nintendo. The core duo is once again Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, who make their way through levels controlled by pirates under the command of Kaptain K. Rool and must rescue the kidnapped Donkey Kong. Dixie brings the unique ability to hover using her ponytail, which opens up different level design possibilities compared to the first game and allows players to clear wider chasms or longer stretches without solid ground.

Rare again avoids a simple port, instead designing levels specifically for the handheld, including new bonus challenges, hidden areas, and collectibles that unlock access to secret passages. The grayscale graphics remain readable, and the characters retain a distinctive silhouette even on the small screen; the animal buddies' animations are smooth, and the level design offers decent environmental variety, from pirate ships to icy fields to dark caves. The sound design works with themes fans know from the console original, adapted to the capabilities of the Game Boy chip, and nicely reinforces the game's pirate theme.

Critics and players alike welcomed the game as a worthy continuation of the successful handheld series, praising in particular the amount of content, the length of the campaign, and its faithfulness to the feel of the console entries. Within the context of the Game Boy library at the time, it ranked among the most technically and content-wise accomplished platformers released on the handheld. Even today it's regarded as one of the best handheld platformers of the nineties and a pleasant choice for anyone who enjoys the classic Donkey Kong Country style of gameplay and is looking for a longer, content-rich challenge on a small screen. Many players still rank it above the first installment of the handheld trilogy itself, thanks to its more balanced difficulty and more thoughtful enemy placement.
