Sonic the Hedgehog – obaly dílů série

Sonic the Hedgehog arrived in 1991 on the Mega Drive with a clear brief: give Sega a mascot who would not be Mario. So the blue hedgehog did not jump cautiously — he hurtled through loops and springs at speeds the hardware of the day was barely built for. What defines the series is momentum: you do not accelerate with a button but with the terrain. Add the rings, which replaced conventional lives with an elegant compromise between punishment and a second chance, a sharp colour palette, jazz-inflected music and Dr. Robotnik, an antagonist who reads more as caricature than as threat.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced Tails and the spin dash, which finally let you build speed from standing, and is widely held to be the best-balanced entry of the classic era. Sonic CD used the Mega CD to travel between past and future versions of the same stage, while Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles could be joined into a single enormous game. The eight-bit Master System and Game Gear meanwhile received their own, far slower and more platform-focused versions, a chapter unto themselves. The 32X got Knuckles Chaotix, the Dreamcast took the series into 3D with Sonic Adventure, and the GBA hosted the Sonic Advance line. Sonic 2, the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD are the titles usually named as peaks, joined more recently by Sonic Mania, which returned to the rhythm of the sixteen-bit era with remarkable precision.
