Sonic and the Secret Rings

akční plošinovka 2007 Sonic Team Sonic the Hedgehog ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

Linear on-rails running instead of open levels; control by tilting the Wii Remote sideways.

Sonic and the Secret Rings took Sonic the Hedgehog on a trip to the fairy-tale world of One Thousand and One Nights and, at the same time, fundamentally reworked how this iconic character was actually controlled on Wii. Sonic Team abandoned the more open, traditional platforming levels in favor of narrow, highly linear tracks along which Sonic hurtles with virtually no room to go anywhere else, while the player steers his direction, speed, and dodging of obstacles by tilting the Wii Remote.

This style, often compared to on-rails action, builds on a constant sense of acceleration and headlong rushing forward — the levels are full of jumps, loops, and speed sections inspired by Oriental motifs from the tales of Scheherazade, from lavish palace gardens to parched desert ruins and flying carpets. Each level opens with a short narrated story that gives the action a fairy-tale framing and links the individual chapters into a more coherent whole. Instead of collecting rings as the main source of health, the game introduces a system of skills that the player unlocks and equips before individual missions, allowing them to customize Sonic's acceleration, jumps, or special abilities according to their preferred playstyle and approach.

Motion controls were received with mixed feelings — some players appreciated the new sense of speed and the directness of steering by simply tilting, while others missed the precision of classic analog controls and complained about occasional unresponsiveness of motion sensing during the game's faster passages. The narrator guiding the player through the individual stories also lends the whole experience a fairy-tale, almost storybook framing that fits well with the chosen Oriental theme. Despite these reservations, Secret Rings showed that Sonic Team was willing to experiment with the identity of an established brand on a completely new platform, and it paved the way for the similarly conceived sequel Sonic and the Black Knight, released two years later.
