The platformer was made by fans from the romhacking scene and outdid the official attempts.

Sonic Mania is a rare case of a game made for a major publisher by people who came up through the fan romhacking scene, and the result ended up outshining most official attempts to bring the blue hedgehog back to his roots. Sega gave the creators free rein, and they built a platformer that picks up exactly where the Mega Drive-era games left off. The player rockets through loops, bounces off springs, collects rings, and searches for hidden paths in multi-layered zones that reward knowledge of the terrain more than fast reflexes. Alongside reworked classic zones like Green Hill or Chemical Plant, the game also offers entirely new settings, including the media-themed metropolis of Studiopolis, and each zone has its own set of ideas, gimmicks, and boss fight.

On Switch the game runs in high resolution and completely stable, with pixel art that's been redrawn from scratch rather than simply scaled up. Portable mode suits it exceptionally well, since individual acts can be cleared in just a few minutes and the game offers an instant restart. Three playable characters are available: Sonic gets a new drop dash, Tails can fly, and Knuckles climbs walls, which fundamentally changes how the same levels play out. Bonus stages chasing after Chaos Emeralds draw on the 3D sequences known from Sonic CD and offer a pleasant change of pace.

Tee Lopes's music combines chiptune sound with funk and jazz motifs and ranks among the best-received soundtracks in the whole series. Critics welcomed the game as the best Sonic in years, and among players it earned a reputation as a title proving that the classic 2D formula never went stale, it was just forgotten. A later expanded version, Sonic Mania Plus, added further characters and an Encore mode with rearranged levels. Today the game plays like a perfectly tuned essence of the genre: short, dense, full of hidden shortcuts, and built for repeat playthroughs. For Switch owners, it's one of the easiest retro experiences to recommend, period.
