Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games followed up on the successful crossover of Nintendo's and Sega's characters, bringing competition in winter Olympic disciplines to Nintendo DS. Players could choose from a wide roster of characters from both the Mario and Sonic universes and test their skills in skiing, bobsled, figure skating, curling, or ski jumping, with each discipline offering its own set of controls that make use of the console's touch screen and microphone, whether it's quick stylus scratching during bobsled runs or blowing into the microphone while cross-country skiing.
Unlike the Wii version, which was built around motion controls, the DS version focused on quick stylus swipes and timed taps, giving the disciplines a distinct yet still accessible character suitable even for less experienced players. The graphics are colorful and legible, emphasizing clearly distinguishable characters and effective winter environments, though technically it's nothing too demanding given the handheld's limitations. The soundtrack maintains a festive, Olympic atmosphere and nicely complements the celebratory tone the series had carried over from its previous entries.
The game appealed mainly to family audiences and fans of fast, effect-driven minigames, who appreciated being able to compete across many disciplines at once, including in multiplayer over local wireless connection. As part of the wider Mario & Sonic series, it confirmed that pairing two iconic mascots could work outside the summer Olympic framework too, offering a fresh set of disciplines. Today it stands as pleasant, undemanding multiplayer fun — more a nostalgic memory of the era of Olympic crossovers than a title with deeper lasting impact.
