Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

plošinovka 2014 Sanzaru Games Sonic the Hedgehog ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

The handheld counterpart to Rise of Lyric; its own story, a 2.5D platformer.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal was the handheld counterpart to Rise of Lyric, sharing the same visual style and story framework of the Sonic Boom brand, but it was an entirely separate title with its own story and different gameplay approach, focused on 2.5D platforming action with exploration elements instead of the sprawling action-adventure of the big console version. The game launched on the same day as Rise of Lyric and served as its companion title for players who preferred a handheld or wanted to enjoy the Sonic Boom story on the go as well.

The game was developed by Sanzaru Games specifically for the Nintendo 3DS and adapted the concept to the handheld's performance and controls - the levels combined classic side-scrolling movement with a collection of abilities from individual characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy), which could be switched on the fly similarly to the big version, just in a much more compact, more linear, and technically far more stable form without the frame rate drops that plagued the Wii U version. The 3DS's stereoscopic 3D added depth to the scrolling environments, and the touch screen served for quick access to the map, inventory, and character equipment. Compared to the chaotic home console version, the handheld entry felt more compact and worked better in short play sessions, though it did not avoid simpler level design and less emphasis on exploration, matching the capabilities of the smaller screen and weaker hardware. Collectibles placed off the main path rewarded players for detours from the linear route and gave even the more straightforward levels a reason for repeated playthroughs.

Why play it: A good choice for 3DS owners who want to sample the Sonic Boom brand in a more accessible, shorter, and above all more stable form than its divisive Wii U sister version offered.
