Sonic Forces

Sonic Forces tells the story of a world conquered by Dr. Eggman with the help of a mysterious enemy named Infinite. Fighting the empire are the classic hedgehog Sonic, his younger self Classic Sonic, and above all the player's own custom character, designed from several animal species and equipped with one of the weapons called Wispons, derived from the colorful alien Wisps. Each weapon type gives the avatar a different special ability - from teleportation to a grappling hook to a fire attack - and the levels are built so that the player has to actively combine these abilities with the classic Sonic boost.

Alternating between three playable styles (Modern, Classic, Avatar) keeps the game's pace brisk - fast sections with grinding, dashing, and automated sequences blend with slower platforming passages and occasional boss fights against Eggman's army. The story is noticeably darker than in previous entries - Eggman has genuinely conquered most of the world, the main heroes are captured or on the run, and the player's own avatar becomes a symbol of the resistance around which the scattered heroes rally once again.

On Switch, this version serves as the portable option for players who want to take Sonic's speed on the road. Compared to PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the game runs at a lower resolution, especially in handheld mode, to maintain the same 60 frames per second as the more powerful consoles. The Switch version is also the only one to support amiibo figures from the Sonic line - scanning them unlocks costumes for the avatar inspired by characters like Shadow or Knuckles, a feature tied purely to Nintendo hardware with an NFC reader in the controller. The levels, campaign, and custom avatar system are otherwise identical across platforms.

Why play: Sonic Forces on Switch is a good pick for players who want to take a fast platformer with them anywhere, and who also want to unlock costumes via amiibo figures that aren't available on other consoles.
