1-on-1 arena with the Sonic crew; Emerl learns opponents' moves and grows with the player.

Sonic Battle, released in 2003 by the Tokyo-based Sonic Team, is a fighting game that brought characters from the Sonic universe to the Game Boy Advance for one-on-one arena battles. Alongside classic names like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, the game also introduces the robotic character Emerl, around whom the main story revolves – Emerl learns moves from the other fighters, and players gradually shape his own fighting style depending on who he fights and how often. Battles take place in freely movable arenas rendered in 2D perspective, emphasizing fast attack combinations, each character's special abilities, and tactical use of the terrain. Every character also has a distinct type of movement and reach, so the playstyle differs noticeably depending on who the player chooses.

The graphics were among the most ambitious on GBA at the time, with smooth animation and a clear presentation despite the handheld's lower resolution, while the music continues the series' traditional electronic style with strong rhythmic motifs accompanying each fighter. Sonic Battle was well received as a refreshing addition to the catalog, praised especially for the inventive system of Emerl learning abilities and a solid story mode, though as a pure fighting game it didn't reach the depth of genre specialists and instead leaned on fun, accessible gameplay.

Today the game remains an interesting detour within the Sonic series, one fans remember mainly for its unconventional concept and pleasant soundtrack, and for many players it represents their first encounter with the character of Emerl and the idea of a learning companion who copies the abilities of other fighters. Within the rich history of Sonic's side-genre detours, it shows that even outside classic platforming runs, Sonic Team was able to create a game with its own distinctive, well-functioning system.
