Sonic Heroes
Sonic Heroes brought a new take on fast-paced platforming action starring Sonic the Hedgehog to Xbox, built around teams of three characters with different abilities - speed, power, and flying - that could be switched on the fly depending on what a given section of the level required. The player progressed through four distinct teams, each with its own story and motivation, offering multiple perspectives on the same sequence of events and extending the game's overall length. Levels combined traditional fast-paced sections with acrobatic jumps and occasional combat passages against distinctive bosses at the end of each themed world.
On Xbox the game ran smoothly and offered the colorful, clearly laid-out environments typical of the series, although the camera and control precision were seen by some players as problematic, especially in more complicated sections with narrow platforms. Switching between characters within a team on the fly was a key gameplay element, requiring quick decisions based on the current on-screen situation and the type of obstacle, whether it called for the fast character, the strong fighter, or the flying partner. The soundtrack, featuring energetic vocal songs for each team, was one of the game's most distinctive and memorable atmospheric elements, one that fans of the series still remember to this day.
Sonic Heroes received a mixed-to-positive reception, with the ambition of the team-based concept praised while criticism targeted technical shortcomings and the uneven difficulty of the camera in more action-heavy passages. Even so, the game found a sizable fan base and became a fond memory of this era of the series for many players. Today it's seen as an interesting, if imperfect, experiment in the history of Sonic's 3D platformers on sixth-generation consoles, and many fans, even decades later, approach it more nostalgically than critically.
Why play it: For Sonic fans who approach it more nostalgically than critically and appreciate the ambitious team concept despite the technical shortcomings and inconsistent camera.
