Sonic as a pinball in Robotnik's fortress Veg-O-Fortress; a quirky spin-off.

Sonic Spinball is one of the blue hedgehog's most idiosyncratic detours away from the main series — a game that takes Sonic's timeless laws of physics (speed, bouncing, momentum) literally and turns him into a pinball. Developed under time pressure in 1993 as a quick filler between the big installments, it takes place across the vertical tables of Robotnik's fortress, Veg-O-Fortress, where the player uses flippers to bounce up and down through a tangle of pipes, valves and switches.

Instead of the classic side-scrolling run, this is about controlling chaos: you free captured animal friends, activate switches, open paths higher up and eventually topple the local boss. The controls combine pinball unpredictability with a touch of direct movement, which leads to moments both brilliant and frustrating — finding your way around the large tables is a challenge, and death lurks in the pits below.

Retro players forgive Spinball its rougher edges precisely because of that boldness: it's a bizarre, atmospherically dark and musically catchy experiment that shows Sega knew how to really experiment with its flagship brand. A cult classic for anyone who loves seeing a familiar face land in a completely different genre.
