A short, brutal action game: one hit means death, each room is a puzzle of ordering your moves.

Katana ZERO is a short, brutal, and remarkably stylish action game in which the player controls a katana-wielding hitman in a neon-lit metropolis reminiscent of eighties film noir. The basic rule is merciless: one hit means death, for enemies and the player alike. Every room is therefore a short puzzle about the correct sequence of moves, requiring the player to deflect a bullet back at the shooter, dodge-roll, throw an object as a distraction, and only then strike. Death carries no punishment beyond an instant restart, so playing becomes a rhythmic loop of attempts until the whole room can be cleared in one fluid pass.

The game cleverly wraps this mechanic into its narrative. The protagonist replays the future in his head in advance, so a failed attempt is, within the story, merely imagined, and a successful run is replayed at the end of the mission as a continuous, uninterrupted film clip. Added to this is a time-slowing ability that can be activated for a limited duration, and a dialogue system in which the player can interrupt their conversation partner, changing the tone and content of scenes. The story of trauma, drug addiction, and manipulation is dark and at times unsettling, making this definitely not a game for the youngest players.

On Switch it's an ideal title for portable mode, since individual missions last only a few minutes and the game runs perfectly smoothly, which is crucial for such reflex-demanding action. The pixel-art graphics rely on a saturated palette, striking lighting, and cinematic cuts, while the soundtrack leans on dark synthwave and drum and bass motifs that precisely match the game's pace. Critics received the game very well, praising above all the combination of hard-edged gameplay with a bold narrative. Today Katana ZERO stands as one of the sharpest representatives of its wave of independent action, and as proof that a short game can be more memorable than much longer competitors.
