Axiom Verge
Axiom Verge is a tribute to the classic Metroid games, created almost entirely by a single person, and that is precisely the source of its almost obsessive coherence. Scientist Trace wakes up after a lab accident in an alien biomechanical world full of decaying machines, speaking entities, and organic structures that appear to be the remnants of an ancient civilization. The game sends him to explore a sprawling interconnected map, where new areas are gated by abilities found along the way, and where careful exploration is rewarded with further weapons and health upgrades.
The most interesting aspect is how the game engages with the theme of a glitch in the system. The key tool is a device that literally corrupts the game's reality: aimed at a wall or an enemy, it starts generating graphical artifacts, alters object behavior, and opens passages that otherwise don't exist. What would be a technical malfunction in other games becomes here a legitimate mechanic and part of the storytelling. The arsenal is also remarkably wide, containing dozens of very different weapons, from spray beams to tools that shoot around corners, and the player is encouraged to switch between them depending on the situation.
On Switch it's an ideal title for both short and longer sessions, since the map is clearly laid out and the game runs entirely smoothly. The visuals deliberately imitate the limited palette of eight-bit consoles, including flickering sprites and rough textures, but they use these with a modern sense of composition and atmosphere. The soundtrack, also written by the author himself, relies on heavy industrial and darkly ambient layers, helping maintain the impression of a foreign, unsettling place. Critics received the game as one of the best modern attempts to capture the feel of the original Metroid without being mere imitation. Today Axiom Verge feels somewhat rougher and less welcoming than newer entries in the genre, but that isolated, oppressive mood is precisely its greatest strength.
