An original story about a seasoned Spider-Man, swinging through Manhattan like never before.

Insomniac Games earned the trust of Sony and Marvel to craft an original, game-first story about an experienced Spider-Man, eight years into the mask, who battles not only crime in New York but also the balance between the mask and Peter Parker's life. The main villain is Mister Negative, but the true heart of the story lies in the relationship with Mary Jane, Aunt May, and the mentorship of young Miles Morales. Traversal across the New York skyline via web-swinging ranks among the best any game has ever offered.

The entire movement system is built on webs that genuinely attach to buildings, so the player learns the rhythm of swings, wall-bounces, and the acceleration at the lowest point of the arc almost subconsciously, and after a few hours stops using fast travel altogether. Combat blends acrobatics, gadgets, and rapid target-switching in a manner reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham series, but with far nimbler dynamics, where dodging warned by spider-sense matters as much as strikes, and enemies can be tethered to surrounding objects. The open world is densely packed with side activities, research tasks, suits with unique abilities, and boss fights against Rhino, Electro, or Kingpin, while the quieter sections as Mary Jane and Miles shift the pace toward stealth and vulnerability.

The game received an enthusiastic reception, became one of PlayStation 4's best-selling exclusives, and proved that a licensed superhero game can be both artistically ambitious and mechanically flawless. Its success led to the DLC The City That Never Sleeps, the spin-off Miles Morales, and the full sequel Spider-Man 2 on PlayStation 5. Insomniac also demonstrated it could tell an original Marvel story independent of the film universe while still respecting decades of comic-book mythology. The photo mode and the ability to freeze time mid-swing between skyscrapers became an integral part of the experience shared across social media.
