Mobile action tied to the film; web-based abilities replace the console's complex combat system.

Spider-Man 3 is a mobile action game released for the premiere of the film of the same name, in which the player, as Spider-Man, moves through the streets of New York, swings on webs between buildings, and battles familiar villains including Venom, Sandman, and Green Goblin, who appear as the main antagonists across the missions. Combat combines simple punch attacks with web-based abilities — tying up enemies, disarming them, and quick dodges that compensate for the limited control options of a phone keypad, replacing the more complex combat system of the console versions with a simplified but functional set of responses.

Technically it was one of the more ambitious titles in Gameloft's lineup at the time — the game tried to evoke a sense of free movement through the city via a sequence of connected missions and short web-swinging sequences, though there could be no talk of a truly open world like in the console version. Graphics were detailed by Java and Symbian standards, with recognizable character models and a color palette matching the film, while the music built the heroic atmosphere of the comic-book source material and accompanied key combat moments at a matching pace.

The game benefited from the enormous popularity of the film trilogy and was among the most anticipated mobile titles of its year, when the Spider-Man license dominated practically every gaming platform simultaneously, from consoles through computers to phones. For many players with a phone but no access to a console, it was the only available way to extend the Spider-Man experience and his battles against period-popular villains after watching the film, albeit in a more limited and shorter form. Today it's interesting mainly as an example of how film blockbusters generated extensive mobile production — largely forgotten today, but at the time an entirely natural part of the marketing for big films, when a viewer could continue the story even outside the cinema.

Why play it: For fans of the film trilogy without console access who wanted to extend the Spider-Man experience onto a phone too, even in a shorter and more limited form.
