Detroit: Become Human
Detroit: Become Human, created by David Cage and Quantic Dream, is set in 2038, when androids perform all manual and service labor for humanity, until some of them begin to awaken with their own consciousness. The player alternately controls three androids - Connor, a detective hunting deviants; Kara, a caregiver protecting a child from a violent father; and Markus, who becomes the face of the android revolution - and their fates gradually intertwine without ever fully merging into a single storyline.
The game relies on extensive story branching through quick-time events and decisions, where practically any character can die at any moment and the story simply continues, making every playthrough a unique experience recorded in clear flowcharts after each chapter. The controls follow the studio's tradition: character movement is complemented by contextual gestures using the DualShock 4's sticks and touchpad, so that even mundane actions like tidying an apartment or treating a wound carry physical weight. Connor also offers a distinctive crime-scene analysis mechanic, letting the reconstructed sequence of events be replayed forward and backward, while the choice between a peaceful and a violent android revolution in Markus's storyline gives the player a genuine sense of responsibility for the fate of an entire species.
Themes of slavery, civil rights, and artificial intelligence are handled with varying degrees of subtlety, but the visual production and motion-capture performances rank among the best in the field - detailed facial expressions, lighting work, and Detroit's rainy, neon-cold appearance create a convincingly near future. Critics praised the ambition and technical craftsmanship, players embraced the enormous replayability, and the game became one of Quantic Dream's most successful titles and proof that interactive drama has a solid place on PlayStation 4. With this title, the studio finally shook off its reputation as the creator of interesting but mechanically fragile experiments from earlier games like Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls.
