Marvel's Spider-Man

Marvel's Spider-Man launched in 2018 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive from Insomniac Games, offering its own comics-independent take on Peter Parker. The series is defined by fluid web-swinging across an open-world Manhattan, an acrobatic combat system inspired by the Batman: Arkham games, and a story that gives equal weight to superheroic action – including a confrontation with the villain Mister Negative – and Peter's civilian life. The open world is rounded out by side crimes scattered across the boroughs and dozens of unlockable suits referencing the character's comic and film history, and the game itself was capped off by the three-episode The City That Never Sleeps DLC. Set in its own dedicated comics continuity, the game world later became the shared foundation for Insomniac Games' connected spin-offs about other Marvel heroes.

The spin-off Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) put Miles, with his own bio-electric powers, in the lead role and doubled as a PlayStation 5 launch title sold as a standalone game, which made it shorter but showcased the new console's capabilities. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023) then paired Peter and Miles as a playable duo, gave Peter new abilities after bonding with a symbiote, and put the hunter Kraven and the Venom he creates at the centre of the story, while also expanding the map to include Queens and Brooklyn. The series has become one of the most successful video game adaptations of a comic-book character and cemented Insomniac Games' reputation for turning superhero fantasy into tangible, fluid gameplay.
