The Amazing Spider-Man
The Amazing Spider-Man is a video game adaptation of the same-named 2012 film reboot, created by studio Beenox, which had already been behind several earlier Spider-Man games. Rather than strictly retelling the film's plot, the game offers its own storyline, taking place after the events of the film and expanding its world with additional villains and plotlines set within the laboratories of the Oscorp corporation.
The game is built around free movement through an open New York, where the player uses web-swinging as the main way to travel between skyscrapers — the system builds on mechanics established in the series' earlier games and emphasizes fluidity and speed of movement through the city, complemented by the ability to freely run along building facades as well. The combat system combines acrobatic strikes, dodges, and use of the environment and web abilities, to which a new "spider sense" element was added, showing incoming attacks and allowing dodges to be chained smoothly in fights against multiple opponents at once. There's also no shortage of optional side activities, item collecting, photographing the city, and completing extra tasks scattered around the streets, which extend the playtime beyond the main storyline and encourage repeated exploration of the individual districts.
Reviews of the game were mixed to slightly above average — the feel of free movement through the city and the scope of the open world were praised, but criticism often turned to the repetitiveness of the side tasks and technical shortcomings in both the combat system and the camera. Still, as a film licensed game, The Amazing Spider-Man ranks among the more solid titles of its kind, and for fans of the character it offers fun, if not fully polished, swinging through the city, which is still valued today mainly for the feel of movement, less so for the depth of the story itself or the combat system, and for many players it remains a pleasant memory of the era of the series' film reboot with Andrew Garfield.
