A narrative split between two hostile characters forces you to live the conflict from both sides.

Five years after the events of the first game, Ellie lives in the settlement of Jackson alongside Joel, until a brutal act of violence forces her onto a path of revenge through a devastated Seattle. Naughty Dog took an enormous risk by splitting the narrative between two opposing characters, forcing players to experience the same conflict from both sides and confront uncomfortable questions about the cycle of violence and retribution. The combat system builds on the first game but is far rawer, enemies react to their surroundings and sounds, environments can be used for stealth or frontal assault, and the game shows no restraint in depicting cruelty and its consequences.

Compared to the first game, Ellie gains the ability to dodge, crawl through tall grass and under cars, and navigate far more vertical, permeable locations where combat can be broken off at any moment by fleeing and restarted from another angle. Enemies call each other by name in battle, patrol with trained dogs, and visibly change behavior upon losing a companion, so every skirmish carries an emotional cost the game deliberately stokes. Technically and in terms of performance, it stands as one of the most refined titles of the generation, with facial capture and animation that pushed the bar for interactive storytelling, and an extraordinarily extensive suite of accessibility options that made it a referenced standard for opening up a demanding action title to players with visual or motor impairments.

Reception was extremely polarized, as part of the player community rejected the story's direction, while critics showered it with a record number of Game of the Year awards. The character Abby, whose physical transformation and motivations sparked heated debate even before release due to leaked footage, ultimately became a symbol of the wider controversy over who a player is allowed to sympathize with. Regardless of the controversy, it remains a work passionately discussed to this day, and it confirmed Naughty Dog as a studio willing to risk narrative convention even at the cost of dividing its fanbase.
