Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Action-Adventure 2016 Naughty Dog UnchartedThief ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

Nathan Drake's final chapter, with the series' most mature story and cinematic pacing of action.

Nathan Drake, seemingly settled into civilian life alongside Elena, is pulled back into a world of treasure and adventure when his brother Sam resurfaces with a story about the pirate treasure of Captain Henry Avery. In the series' final installment, Naughty Dog bet on its most emotionally mature storytelling yet, tackling questions of family, lies, addiction to adrenaline, and the price adventure exacts on relationships.

Action sequences combine platforming, cover-based shootouts, and, for the first time, a grappling rope enabling more dramatic movement and vertical combat, while more open locations in Madagascar offer greater freedom than the series' earlier linear installments, including longer stretches driving a winch-equipped off-road vehicle. Stealth received a fully realized form for the first time, with tall grass, enemy marking, and the option to advance silently through entire arenas, letting the player choose between a cinematic firefight and patiently picking off patrols. Quieter chapters, meanwhile, unfold entirely without combat, relying on exploring a house, conversations, and memories, lending the series - previously built mainly around action - an unexpectedly personal tone. Visually and technically, it was one of the most spectacular titles of the generation, with cinematic direction approaching the quality of a Hollywood adventure film.

Critics praised the dignified and emotionally powerful farewell to the series along with the overall polish of the gameplay; the game earned numerous Game of the Year awards and is considered one of the high points of the action-adventure genre on PlayStation 4. The character Nadine Ross and the new villain Rafe Adler brought a fresh perspective on treasure hunters' motivations to the series' finale, while an epilogue set years later with daughter Cassie showed Drake finally settled down, giving players an emotionally satisfying farewell after four installments. The multiplayer component and the standalone expansion The Lost Legacy, starring Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, further expanded the world beyond the main story.
