Massive hordes of hundreds of zombies force you to use traps and terrain tactically; the motorbike is almost a character.

Former outlaw biker Deacon St. John survives in post-apocalyptic Oregon two years after a pandemic broke out, turning most of humanity into Freakers - fast, unpredictable zombies that travel in the hundreds as so-called Hordes. It is precisely these massive Hordes, which must be dealt with tactically using traps, incendiary bottles, and terrain, that rank among the game's most compelling elements, setting it apart from other zombie titles. The motorcycle isn't just a means of transport but a survival mechanic in its own right, since it burns fuel, wears down, and requires maintenance, deepening the sense of fragility in a world with no rescue in sight.

The world reacts to time of day and weather; at night and in the rain the infected are faster and more numerous, and Hordes move between nests and water sources on their own schedule, so attacking one is always a planned operation with an escape route and an ammunition supply. Materials for explosives, bandages, and silencers are gathered continuously from abandoned houses and vehicles, and upgrades for the motorcycle and weapons are bought with reputation earned among various survivor camps, forcing the player to choose whom to serve. The sprawling Oregon landscape, with its dense forests, volcanic plains, and abandoned mountain towns, offered an unusually American, rugged alternative to the European or Asian post-apocalyptic settings common in the genre.

The story tackles themes of loss, guilt, and brotherhood among biker clans, though critics viewed the narrative as less original than the technical execution of the horde battles. The game had performance issues and bugs at launch, which hurt its initial reviews, but gradual patches and later releases on other platforms earned it a reputation as an underrated gem with one of the best zombie-horde concepts of the generation. Despite solid sales, Bend Studio decided not to develop a sequel, leaving the game a closed but well-regarded experiment for Sony.
