An open world inspired by samurai films, where the wind, not a map, points the way to your destination.

The year is 1274; the Mongol invasion is ravaging the island of Tsushima, and the samurai Jin Sakai, one of the few survivors of his clan, must choose between the honor-bound path of bushido and the ruthless, covert tactics that are the only hope of defeating an overwhelming enemy. Sucker Punch, until then known mainly for Infamous, created an open world inspired by Japanese samurai films, where the wind literally points the way to the next objective instead of traditional maps and markers.

Combat unfolds in tense one-on-one duels as well as chaotic skirmishes, with the player switching between combat stances depending on the enemy type and gradually combining open confrontation with ninja tools such as smoke bombs or a bow. A signature feature is the opening standoff, in which Jin challenges a group of enemies himself and, with a single precise draw of the sword, cuts down several of them before the actual battle even begins. Exploring the island isn't driven by a quest list but by curiosity: smoke over a burned village, a flock of birds, or a fox by a forest shrine lead the player to camps, hot springs, and bamboo-cutting challenges that gradually increase Jin's resolve and combat skills. The visual stylization, with fields of red grass, maple forests, and the black-and-white grainy Kurosawa cinema mode, made the game one of the most visually striking titles of the generation.

The game became a commercial hit, received numerous awards for its artistic direction, and paved the way for the multiplayer mode Legends as well as the sequel Yotei. Jin is also one of the few major games fully dubbed in Japanese with matching lip movement, which, combined with traditional music and quiet, contemplative moments by the campfire composing haiku, gave the experience an unusually meditative tone compared to typical open worlds. The Iki Island expansion added a new island and revealed Jin's past tied to his father, deepening the hero's psychological dimension.
