A compact Christmas-set spin-off about the young successor with bioelectric powers.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was Insomniac Games' use of the success of its first Spider-Man to create a more compact but narratively focused spin-off about young Miles Morales, who at Christmas takes on the responsibility of protecting New York while Peter Parker goes on vacation, and faces both the energy corporation Roxxon and his own struggle to master his newly gained bioelectric powers. Miles has a different combat style than Peter - his invisibility and electrifying Venom strikes offer a different tactical dynamic from the original, while the smaller, snow-covered version of Manhattan allowed the developers to focus on density of detail rather than sheer size.

Swinging on webs remained just as smooth and addictive as in the first game, and the new acrobatic animations reflect Miles's inexperience as well as his street-inspired, dance-tinged personality. The game also served as a technology showcase for the PlayStation 5's capabilities with ray tracing and near-instant loading, though it also released on PlayStation 4, where it retained an impressive look for a snow-covered metropolis. The Christmas atmosphere of Harlem, with decorations and festive lighting, gave the game a different mood from the first game's summery tone.

The story sensitively explores themes of growing up, family loss, and the responsibility Miles takes on as a young Black hero in a role that significantly enriched superhero media representation, and the community dimension, where the hero defends his own neighborhood and its residents, strengthens the story's more personal, local tone. Critics praised the emotional depth despite the shorter length and the excellent combat system; the game was commercially successful and cemented Miles as a distinct character alongside Peter Parker. The short but intense campaign also proved that a spin-off need not be seen as an inferior add-on, but as a full-fledged, thoroughly polished experience in its own right.
