Metal Gear Solid
„Snake? Snake?! SNAAAKE!" Few lines have burned themselves into players' memories as deeply as this one. Metal Gear Solid from 1998, created by Hideo Kojima and Konami, was not merely a great game — it was proof that a video game could be a gripping thriller, a cinematic epic, and a bitter meditation on nuclear weapons and war all at once.
The game practically defined the modern stealth genre. As agent Solid Snake you infiltrate the Shadow Moses facility, where instead of trading fire you slip through the shadows, avoid the enemies' cones of vision, knock on walls to lure attention away, and hide beneath a cardboard box. The emphasis on avoiding combat, on patience and planning, was a revelation at the time and set the rules the genre still follows today.
But Kojima never spelled things out bluntly. Metal Gear Solid is famous for its cinematic storytelling, long, masterfully directed scenes, and characters who broke the fourth wall in unforgettable ways — the battle with Psycho Mantis, who „read" your memory card and controller, ranks among the most quoted moments in gaming history.
The atmosphere is equally captivating: a wind-battered Alaskan base, the voice on the codec radio, unforgettable bosses, and music that ratchets up the tension. The game managed to balance suspense, humor, and surprisingly serious themes of heredity, identity, and responsibility for weapons of mass destruction.
Metal Gear Solid became one of the most influential and commercially successful titles of the PlayStation era and launched a series that spent decades pushing the boundaries of what a video game can tell. To this day it remains the yardstick against which ambitious, story-driven action games are measured.
Why play it: For the founding work of modern stealth and a cinematic narrative that showed just how mature and intelligent a medium video games can be.
