Kojima's last Metal Gear Solid and the series' first truly open world.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was the final entry by legendary creator Hideo Kojima in the Metal Gear Solid franchise and also its first genuinely open world, set in the mountains of Afghanistan and the savannas of Angola in the mid-1980s. The game follows Punished Snake, who after a nine-year coma sets out for revenge against the organization Cipher while also building his own mercenary army, Diamond Dogs, funded precisely by resources and prisoners found and extracted directly in the field via the iconic Fulton Recovery balloon system. The structure is mission-based, but each mission is essentially an open puzzle: the player chooses their own arrival time, drop point, loadout, and companion, whether a dog, the sniper Quiet, or a robotic horse.

Stealth infiltration reached unprecedented systemic depth in this entry — dynamic weather, a day-night cycle, and enemies reacting to the player's tactics by installing anti-headshot helmets or reinforcing patrols after repeated infiltrations create a genuinely reactive simulation where no two missions play out the same way. The player's base, Mother Base, develops by gathering personnel and resources, with individual units specialized in combat, reconnaissance, or development able to be combined for more efficient operations. Controls are incomparably smoother than in earlier series entries, since Snake finally moves and aims like a character from a modern action game.

The game shipped unfinished due to Kojima's falling-out with Konami, which showed most clearly in a rushed second act and a missing final chapter, yet the core gameplay and the technical sophistication of the Fox Engine remain generally regarded as among the best in the entire series and the whole stealth-action genre. The Fox Engine ran remarkably stably on Xbox One even during sprawling scenes, and the lighting of desert plains ranked among the visual highlights of the time. Today The Phantom Pain is viewed with mixed feelings: as a torso of a story, yet at the same time as one of the best-designed action sandboxes ever made.
