An unofficial Castlevania metroidvania for the Spectrum; Dracula's castle that Konami never released.

A Castlevania on the ZX Spectrum that no one ever officially released — and yet it exists, it is beautiful and it plays superbly. Spectral Interlude is a homebrew tribute to the legendary series, the kind Konami might wish it had in its catalogue.

Instead of purely linear action, the game offers a metroidvania approach: you explore Dracula's interconnected castle, gain new abilities and return to previously inaccessible places. On top of that it adds dialogue with characters and story choices, which make it feel surprisingly rich for something running on eight-bit hardware. Whip combat, platform jumping and a gothic atmosphere — everything you expect from Castlevania is faithfully captured here within the limits of the Spectrum.

The game is the work of talented members of the homebrew community and excels above all in its outstanding music, which uses the Spectrum's sound capabilities to the fullest and evokes the series' famous melodies. It is precisely the soundtrack and the stylised graphics that make Spectral Interlude one of the most impressive fan projects ever created on the platform.

The phenomenon of officially unreleased yet meticulously crafted homebrew games shows how strong the community around the Spectrum remains. The creators here were not bound by commercial deadlines or licensing fees, so they could polish the game to perfection and offer it for free or for a symbolic price.

For Castlevania fans it is a touching encounter with a beloved brand in an unexpected coat; for Spectrum lovers, proof that the platform can still surprise. Spectral Interlude quickly ranked among the most recommended homebrew titles of the last decade.

Why play it: For a loving metroidvania tribute to Castlevania with splendid music that no one expected on the Spectrum — and yet it works.
