A modern homebrew action-adventure that feels like it fell straight out of the Spectrum's golden age.

Proof that the ZX Spectrum never truly died is called Sword of Ianna — a modern homebrew action adventure that looks and plays as if it had fallen straight from the peak of the rubber-key's golden era. And yet it was created long after commercial production of Spectrum games had ended.

The game is proudly inspired by the classic Saimazoom and above all by the style of games in the vein of the Sir Fred series — it offers a sprawling world you traverse from left to right and in depth, fighting enemies, collecting items and working out how to get further. The emphasis is on exploration and gradual uncovering of an interconnected map full of traps and secrets. The visuals rely on colourful, detailed pixel-art graphics and smooth animation that would have done a professional studio proud decades ago.

Sword of Ianna comes from the active Spanish homebrew community, which to this day releases new titles on physical cassettes as well as digitally. It is precisely this scene that keeps the Spectrum alive, and Sword of Ianna is one of its most highly prized creations — a project that visibly reflects both love for the platform and craftsmanlike care.

For a newcomer the game is an excellent introduction to what adventure looked like on the eight-bit, but without the technical compromises the era dictated back then. For those who remember it, it is a nostalgic visit to their youth in a new coat.

The release on a real cassette with professionally produced packaging also shows how seriously the homebrew creators mean it — this is no mere fan attempt, but a full-fledged game that holds its own next to the legends of the day.

Why play it: For a modern homebrew adventure that honours the classic Spectrum while offering a fresh, polished experience.
