Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure from FromSoftware set in a fictional feudal Japan of the late Sengoku period, which significantly departs from the Souls series' earlier character-building system in favor of a single, fixed protagonist, a one-armed ninja named Wolf, protecting a young lord whose mysterious bloodline grants immortality. The key new feature is a posture/balance system, where the goal of combat isn't primarily to deplete an opponent's health but their stability through precisely timed deflections, creating an intense, swordfight-like rhythm of combat that resembles a katana duel more than classic action-RPG battles. The game therefore doesn't reward carefully circling an enemy, but constant pressure.
The player's prosthetic arm allows equipping various tools such as a grappling hook for vertical movement across rooftops, an axe against shield-bearing enemies, or a fire device against animal opponents, adding a tactical layer beyond swordplay itself. The grappling hook in particular fundamentally changes level structure: locations are built vertically, the player moves across rooftops and branches, bypasses patrols, and can use stealth kills to weaken bosses even before the fight itself begins. The resurrection system allows one immediate revival right at the spot of death in the middle of combat, opening up risky but often crucial tactical options in fights against the game's toughest bosses. Visually, the game relies on a muted palette of autumnal Japan, fog, snow, and a soundscape built from traditional instruments.
The game won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019 and is generally regarded as the most demanding yet most precise action title from FromSoftware, proving that the studio could craft a great game even outside the established Souls formula. One of the loudest debates of its time erupted around its difficulty, since Sekiro offers none of the usual escape routes in the form of summoned help or character rebuilding — the player must master exactly one combat language. Today Sekiro is seen as the purest design in the studio's portfolio.
