Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics took the brutal universe of the series and translated it into turn-based tactics — and against expectations, it clicked. The story takes place twelve years before the first game, shortly after the event known as Emergence Day, and follows the rebellious Gabe Diaz, whom command sends to eliminate the scientist responsible for the worst Locust experiments. Instead of base management and a global map, as you'd know from other tactics games, this is a more briskly paced, mission-structured campaign, where gear and squad abilities are upgraded between operations.
Combat runs on action points — each character has three, and can spend them on movement, shooting, reloading, or a special ability, so a single turn can accomplish considerably more than in classic genre entries. The system also rewards aggression: finishing off an enemy in one go grants an extra turn, and knocking an opponent down lets you execute them in a brutal animation that boosts the whole squad's morale. Classes such as support, sniper, or heavy complement one another, and the upgrade tree offers plenty of specializations. At the end of each act awaits a fight against a giant creature that must be taken down piece by piece. Soldiers can also be dressed in scavenged gear that isn't just cosmetic but changes stats, turning loot collection into a motivation of its own.
Visually, the game looks exceptionally good for a tactics title — the camera zooms in on gunfire, the environment is full of rubble and smoke, and even on Xbox One it holds a decent frame rate. Sound and music carry over the main series' oppressive tone and land well during fights with larger creatures. Reviews were favorable, praising the dynamism and presentation, with criticism aimed at repetitive side missions. Today it's an excellent pick for anyone who wants to enjoy turn-based tactics without the lengthy strategic layering and resource management between individual battles. Optional missions help restore squad condition, since wounded soldiers heal over several turns, and at higher difficulty losses are counted as permanent.
