A launch title for the Xbox One; laser-scanned tracks and photorealistic car lighting.

Forza Motorsport 5 was an Xbox One launch title and the first showcase of what the new generation would bring to simulation racing. Turn 10 Studios used the new console's power for photorealistic lighting of cars and tracks, while laser scanning of the road surface allowed the precise capture of asphalt imperfections on real circuits like Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, or Laguna Seca. Cars received fully modeled interiors, and the cockpit view became a fully viable option for wheel-and-pedal play as well. Running at 1080p at a steady sixty frames per second was a non-negotiable requirement for the series, to which Turn 10 subordinated a number of visual compromises.

New was a reworked Drivatar system, using cloud computing power for the first time to generate opponents that learn from real players' driving style and then race against them even in their absence. The damage model and physics grew noticeably more precise compared to previous entries, as did tire behavior and wear over longer races, so racing strategy began to matter even outside the narrow circle of hardcore simulation fans. The engine sound recordings, which Turn 10 captured directly from real cars on the circuits, remained technically unmatched and defined the honest, simulation-focused approach of the Motorsport brand in contrast to its more arcade-leaning sister series, Horizon.

At launch, the game suffered from a limited selection of cars and tracks due to the short development cycle dictated by the new console's launch, leading to criticism of the pricing policy for additional content sold as car packs, as well as of the reward economy, which developers had to adjust after release. Many players also missed favorite circuits from previous entries. Forza Motorsport 5 thus mainly served as a showcase of the Xbox One's graphical possibilities right at the console's launch, and as the technical foundation on which later entries in the series built the content it itself lacked.
