State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2 is a survival game about surviving a zombie apocalypse, in which the player doesn't manage just one character but an entire community of survivors, whose members have their own personalities, skills, relationships, and risk of permanent death. Players switch freely between characters, and each one wears down from fatigue and injuries, so it's necessary to rotate them like a real team. Undead Labs expanded the concept of the first game with cooperative play for up to four players, who together build a fortified base, scavenge supplies from abandoned buildings, and face growing threats including mutated zombie types.

A key element is the permanent death of characters — if a beloved community member dies, it's for good, which lends even minor grain-sack runs a high degree of tension and personal investment. Noise also attracts attention, so gunfire tends to be a last resort, while quiet work with blunt weapons or sneaking past patrolling infected pays off more. The game offers three sprawling open maps with different terrain and dangers, between which the whole community can migrate if the current base becomes unsustainable, and a new addition was so-called blood plague hearts — infection sources that must be located and destroyed.

The game's economy revolves around gathering resources, upgrading the base, and managing the morale of survivors, who can fall ill, get injured, or quarrel with each other over scarce resources and, in extreme cases, even leave. The technical side was criticized at launch for unstable framerates and graphical shortcomings, but the core gameplay built around improvised survival and community-building won over a loyal player base, and the game received numerous updates as well as an expanded edition. State of Decay 2 remains to this day one of the few open-world survival titles with such a deep emphasis on the social dynamics of a survivor group.
