Microsoft's answer to Gran Turismo; a realistic driving model, the foundation of a major franchise.

Forza Motorsport from Turn 10 Studios was Microsoft's answer to the dominant Japanese Gran Turismo series and laid the foundation for one of the most important racing brands in console history. The first entry bet on a realistic driving model that factored in vehicle weight, weight distribution, tire wear, and behavior under different weather conditions, and offered deep tuning options reaching into practically every mechanical component, from the gearbox to spring stiffness.

An innovation that set the game apart from the competition was a technology called Drivatar, which analyzed the player's driving style and could subsequently mimic it as an AI driving the vehicle even in the player's absence, a concept that later became one of the defining features of the whole series and returned in a much more sophisticated form in later entries. A welcoming step toward less experienced players was also an optional set of assists, from an ideal racing line drawn on the track to adjustable traction control, so everyone could choose their own level of difficulty. Vehicle damage, moreover, was not merely cosmetic and affected handling, making cautious driving part of race strategy.

The game also offered extensive visual customization options, including custom liveries and color schemes created directly in-game, allowing players to create truly unique cars and share them with the community via Xbox Live. A rich career mode guided the player through hundreds of licensed cars across various classes, and honest physics combined with accessible controls made Forza a serious rival to established simulations. Since it was released shortly before the end of the original console's life cycle and only a few months before the arrival of the Xbox 360, Forza Motorsport is often called a dignified and technically accomplished swan song for the first generation of Xbox.
