Forza Horizon

Forza Horizon brought a major shift for the Forza series - instead of closed circuits, it offered an open world inspired by Colorado, where a fictional music-and-automotive festival called Horizon takes place. Here the player doesn't just race against opponents but freely explores roads, side quests, and hidden collectibles, bringing the game closer to an arcade driving style while retaining the solid physics core inherited from Forza Motorsport. Progress was marked by colorful festival wristbands earned through victories, pushing the player ever deeper into the event's hierarchy toward a final duel, and the world also hid barns containing wrecks of classic cars that could be found through vague hints and restored.

The newly formed studio Playground Games, founded by veterans of Bizarre Creations, managed on its very first attempt to create a fresh and atmospheric world with a dynamic day-night cycle and a festival atmosphere full of music and energy. The freedom of movement, the ability to hold street races, and speed-camera runs added a fun, less formal touch compared to its sister series, while radio stations with licensed music and DJ voices gave the drive exactly the summer festival mood the whole concept was built on. The graphical rendering of the landscape and lighting effects ranked among the best on the Xbox 360, with the transitions between morning haze, sharp midday, and nighttime headlights giving the drive a variability that closed circuits could never offer.

Critics praised the boldness of bringing arcade freedom to an established simulation brand without sacrificing the quality of the driving model. Commercial and critical success led to the founding of the entire Forza Horizon spin-off series, which later became one of the most successful racing franchises ever and definitively shifted the open world to the center of attention within the racing genre.
