Forza Motorsport 2
Forza Motorsport 2 was released in 2007 and cemented the series' position as the main simulation racing title on Xbox 360, competing primarily with the Gran Turismo series on the rival platform, gradually building a reputation as a simulation that takes motorsport and car collecting seriously. The game offered an extensive lineup of licensed cars from ordinary sedans to exotic supercars, an elaborate system for modifying and tuning chassis, transmission, and aerodynamics, and an in-depth driving physics model that rewarded players willing to study tire settings and car weight distribution.
The career mode also offered a series of championships with graduated difficulty and different vehicle classes, so the player gradually progressed from modest hatchbacks to full-blooded racing specials. Remarkable for its time was also the game's economy built around collecting and trading cars, including an auction house where players could exchange rare cars and their own custom livery designs created with an elaborate livery editor, which became one of the series' hallmarks. Visually, the game looked clean and technically advanced, with faithfully lit tracks, realistic tire behavior, and finely modeled car interiors, underlining its ambition to be a credible and believable motorsport simulation.
Reviews received the title as a marked improvement over the first installment, praising the depth of tuning, breadth of content, and community features for sharing designs, while mild criticism was directed at the opponent AI and vehicle behavior in collisions. Forza Motorsport 2 cemented the foundations on which later, more successful installments of the series built, including the emphasis on community content, auctions, and sharing cars among players worldwide. Today, simulation players return to it as an important milestone in the development of the entire Forza brand, one that foreshadowed the direction the series took for the rest of the Xbox 360 generation.
Why play it: For its tuning depth, rich content, and community car sharing, it's an important milestone in the development of the Forza brand, even though the opponent AI and collision behavior have their flaws.
