FromSoftware is a Japanese studio that transformed from a maker of mech simulators and bone-chilling action RPGs into one of the most influential game design creators of the last fifteen years. Today the studio's name is inseparably tied to the Souls series and to the word derived from it — soulslike, a genre defined by a measured, uncompromising, yet fair combat system. But before FromSoftware discovered this formula, it went through a long journey from the early King's Field games, through the techno-action Armored Core series, to the dark Demon's Souls, which kicked off one of the most distinctive waves in modern gaming history.

History

The studio was founded in Tokyo in the mid-1980s and spent its first era experimenting with various genres, among which the mech action series Armored Core and the early 3D RPG King's Field stood out, earning the studio a reputation as a creator of dense, technically demanding worlds. It was precisely this experience with a relentless, slow, and deliberate combat pace that later became the foundation for the studio's greatest success.

The turning point was 2009 and Demon's Souls for the PlayStation 3 — a game that combined a dark atmosphere, minimalist storytelling, and an uncompromising yet fair combat system in a form no one else offered at the time. The follow-up Dark Souls (2011) expanded the formula into a more interconnected, open world and launched a series that would go on to receive the sequels Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III. Meanwhile, in 2015 FromSoftware released Bloodborne, a PlayStation 4 exclusive that, with its gothic horror aesthetic and faster combat, showed that the studio was able to vary its formula.

The next milestone was Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), which abandoned the branching character-building system in favor of a more direct, parry-based combat system set in feudal Japan. The pinnacle of the studio's work to date became Elden Ring (2022), an open world created in collaboration with fantasy author George R. R. Martin, which multiplied the series' reach far beyond its existing player base and became one of the most successful titles of its generation. In 2014, FromSoftware came under the wing of the Japanese publishing and media conglomerate Kadokawa, which gave the studio a stable foundation for further growth.

Key People

The face of the studio's modern era is undoubtedly Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring, who gradually worked his way up to the position of FromSoftware's president and is considered one of the most distinctive game creators of today. The studio was founded by Naotoshi Zin, who was there at its creation, back when FromSoftware worked in genres completely different from the action RPGs it is famous for today.

Today

Even in 2026, FromSoftware remains one of the most closely watched studios in the world, and the soulslike formula it helped create has influenced the entire games industry — dozens of other studios today claim its legacy. The studio remains part of the Kadokawa conglomerate and continues developing the world of Elden Ring along with other projects, and even after years of success it maintains its reputation as a creator that has never sacrificed its demanding yet fair gameplay for the sake of simplifying things for a broader audience.
