Elden Ring

Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG from Japanese studio FromSoftware, created in collaboration with fantasy author George R. R. Martin, who crafted the mythological backdrop of the shattered Elden Ring and its scattered wielders of power. The game brings the series' signature unforgiving difficulty and deliberate combat from Souls and Bloodborne into the vast open world of the Lands Between, where the player is free to explore from the very start, discovering hidden caves, catacombs, and legendary bosses in any order without linear guidance. The simple ability to bypass a tough opponent and return later fundamentally changed the accessibility of the whole franchise.

A key element is the game's surprisingly generous yet unobtrusive help system: cryptic messages left on the ground by other players, summonable spirit companions, and the horse Torrent, which makes both fast travel and fighting giant bosses far easier. The character-building system offers extreme freedom between swords, spells, fire abilities, and hybrid styles, with each weapon carrying its own unique movesets and so-called Ashes of War for further customization. The storytelling remains traditionally fragmented and hidden in item descriptions, so players piece the lore together among themselves rather than through explicit dialogue.

On Xbox One the game ran in a more limited form due to the engine's demands, though it fully showed off its visuals on newer hardware; even so, it kept the impressive vistas the studio uses in place of conventional objective markers. Elden Ring won over three hundred Game of the Year awards and is widely regarded as one of the most significant and influential RPGs in the history of the medium, defining the soulslike genre for the decade to come. The later Shadow of the Erdtree expansion added an entirely new, sprawling region with its own story and boss gallery comparable in scope to a smaller standalone game.
