ELDEN RING
ELDEN RING combines the demanding combat system the studio is known for with a sprawling open world called the Lands Between. As the Tarnished, the player searches for shards of a shattered ring and becomes a rival to the demigods who divided its fragments among themselves. The storytelling stays sparse and unforgiving toward a careless player, since essential information hides in item descriptions and conversations that are easy to miss entirely. The world is split into six large above-ground regions and an extensive underground that forms a second map almost as large as the first.
The open world changed the pacing. The player almost always has a choice of where to go, and if something stops them, they can leave, grow stronger elsewhere, and come back later. Helping with this is a horse capable of a double jump and quick movement, along with a huge number of smaller dungeons, castles, and catacombs scattered across the land. Combat relies on stamina, dodging, and attack timing, but adds Ashes of War — interchangeable special weapon skills — and the ability to summon allies. Character building is quite open, ranging from heavy weapons through sorceries and incantations to bows, and stat points can be reallocated at will at the appropriate NPC. Multiplayer again rests on messages, summoning, and invasions into other players' worlds.
Technically, the game suffered from frame-rate stutters on PC at launch, which later patches addressed; today it runs considerably better, though it remains demanding. Visually it relies on muted, golden, misty vistas that lure the player toward the next destination from a distance, which is one of the main reasons exploration works so well. The music again mostly appears during fights against major bosses and ranks among the best in its category. Reception was extraordinary, and the game won numerous awards, including several Game of the Year titles. The later expansion Shadow of the Erdtree added another large region. Today it serves as the foundation of the genre and, at the same time, as the most accessible entry point into the studio's games.
