Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition brought to computers a dark fantasy adventure set in the cursed kingdom of Lordran, where the player, as an undead, searches for a way to stop the fading of the fire that holds the world together. The story isn't told through cutscenes but through item descriptions, architecture, and terse character lines, so the player pieces it together themselves and much of it remains open to interpretation. The game's strength lies in how interconnected its world is, since the entire map forms one linked whole, where an unlocked shortcut surprisingly leads back to a place the player passed through hours earlier.
Combat is slow, deliberate, and built around managing stamina. Every dodge, block, and attack costs stamina, and a mistake means death, after which the player loses the souls they've collected, which serve as both currency and experience. Getting them back is possible only by returning to the place of death, which creates tension with every step forward. The character can be built in vastly different ways, from a heavily armored fighter with a large shield to a swift swordsman, a sorcerer, or a faithful wielding miracles, and equipment is upgraded at blacksmiths using rare materials. Multiplayer is handled unconventionally, through other players' accumulating messages, summoning help, and invading other players' worlds.
The computer release was originally a weak port with a locked resolution and a low frame count, which community fixes quickly resolved, and a reworked version was released later. Visually the game feels subdued and grimy; music appears almost exclusively during fights against major bosses, so exploration is accompanied only by environmental sounds, which considerably heightens the tension. Reception was very strong, and the game popularized difficulty as part of the experience rather than an obstacle. Its influence is enormous, having spawned an entire wave of imitators that adopted its bonfires, the loss of currency upon death, and storytelling through the environment. Today it remains harsh, but fair.
