A merciless action RPG from FromSoftware that founded the soulslike genre.

This dark, unforgiving action RPG from FromSoftware dropped players into the cursed kingdom of Boletaria, where archaic, deliberately cruel difficulty, permanent loss of souls on death, and asynchronous online features like other players' messages on the ground or ghostly traces of their deaths forged an entirely new genre standard. Hidetaka Miyazaki, at the time a relatively unknown designer, built a hub-and-spoke system of levels connected by a central Nexus, where the player upgraded their character and weapons taken from merciless bosses between expeditions. Combat is built on stamina management, where every strike, block, and dodge costs something, so even an ordinary soldier can kill a careless player in moments.

The online layer was radical for its time: players could summon each other for help in the form of phantoms, or conversely invade another player's world uninvited and try to kill the host. The body-form system, where the player has full health in bodily form but is exposed to invasions from others, while in soul form they have a reduced maximum stamina, created a unique risk-and-reward balance that the series later replicated in slightly modified form. On top of that came the world's tendency, changing difficulty and rewards according to the player's behavior.

The game initially released only in Japan and then in North America through imports and enthusiastic word of mouth, before publishers formally brought it wider. Critics praised the rewarding feeling of overcoming seemingly impossible challenges and the atmospheric, gothic level design. Demon's Souls laid the foundation for the entire souls-like genre, which later developed through Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and up to Elden Ring, influencing countless other studios worldwide. For the PS3, it was one of the most influential titles of the generation, even though it initially seemed commercially niche, before it became clear how fundamental an impact it would have on the future of the entire gaming industry.
