Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Island Thunder
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Island Thunder was created as an Xbox-exclusive expansion and took players to a fictional Caribbean island, where the Ghosts unit fights against insurgents and drug lords. Compared to the base game, it brought new weapons, vehicles, and game modes, including a capture-the-flag mode tailored for tactical team play, and preserved the series' characteristic emphasis on realistic, slower-paced tactics, where a single poorly aimed shot can quickly take a soldier out of the fight. The new weapons also included attachments like silencers and different ammunition types, allowing for an even more deliberate approach to individual firefights.
The island's dense tropical vegetation offered visually distinct scenery compared to previous entries in the series and opened up new options for stealthy advances as well as long-range sniping. The game's engine stayed close to the original Ghost Recon, but with minor improvements to lighting and character models tuned to the Xbox's performance. The sound design emphasized quiet movement through the brush and distant patrol sounds, forcing players to rely on hearing and patience rather than direct confrontation. Multiplayer via Xbox Live extended the game's lifespan and allowed for both competitive and cooperative play by smaller teams in new modes.
Island Thunder was received as a solid, content-rich expansion that offered fans of the tactical series plenty of new content at a reasonable price, though reviewers noted it was more of an expansion than a full-fledged sequel. In the context of Xbox, it represented another exclusive title in the Tom Clancy's lineup that helped the console establish itself as a platform for deliberate tactical games, and for lovers of slower, more realistic military action it remains an interesting, if now largely forgotten, entry in the genre's history. The expansion also kept the series' player base active until the next installment arrived and contributed to Ghost Recon's reputation as one of the most serious military series of its generation.
Why play it: For lovers of slower, more realistic military action who'll appreciate a content-rich expansion at a reasonable price, even though it's more of an add-on than a full sequel.
