Halo 2
Halo 2 ranks among the most significant titles in console gaming history, because it was this game that launched the online multiplayer phenomenon on a massive scale through the Xbox Live service and convinced millions of players that paying for an online subscription on a console was worth it. Bungie added dual-wielding to the combat system, letting players carry two pistols or other small weapons at once, and adjusted the regenerating shield so its status wasn't shown by a clear indicator at a glance, raising the tension in firefights and forcing players to rely on instinct.
The true revolution, however, was the sophisticated matchmaking system, which automatically paired players of similar skill level and allowed tracking of leaderboards and statistics, a concept that still forms the foundation of online console gaming today and inspired practically every multiplayer shooter that followed. Millions of players around the world spent countless hours in competitive matches on beloved maps, turning Halo 2 into a social phenomenon that spilled beyond the game itself into pop culture and evening get-togethers with friends. Technically, it was a title that squeezed the maximum out of the original Xbox, with noticeably more detailed models and lighting than the first game, though at the cost of occasional extra texture loading at the start of scenes.
The campaign continues Master Chief's story but newly introduces a playable perspective for the Arbiter, a member of the Elite race and former enemy who becomes the titular Arbiter, offering a view of the conflict from the other side. The narrative has an epic scope and the boldness to break down the black-and-white divide between sides, though it ends with a notoriously criticized cliffhanger caused by release deadline pressure and insufficient time to finish planned content. Commercially, it was one of the most successful titles of its entire generation, and its influence on online console gaming is immeasurable.
