The handover of the series to 343 Industries; it wakes the Chief and explores his relationship with Cortana.

Halo 4 marked the handover of the series' reins to the new studio 343 Industries after Bungie's departure, and the game set out to show that the brand could continue even with a different team at the helm. The story wakes Master Chief after four years of cryo-sleep aboard the ship Forward Unto Dawn and introduces a new threat - the ancient Promethean race and the mysterious entity known as the Didact. The central theme became the relationship between the Chief and the artificial intelligence Cortana, whose gradual deterioration gives the story unexpected emotional depth and, for the first time in the series, foregrounds a personal drama rather than the fate of the galaxy.

The gameplay stayed true to the series' fundamentals but added new weapons, enemies with different tactics, and a visually more ambitious environment thanks to an upgraded engine. The Prometheans behaved differently from the Covenant: they teleported, hid behind shields, and were accompanied by flying drone units, forcing the player to break habits formed by previous entries. The new set of Forerunner weapons also visually assembled and disintegrated right in the character's hands, one of the most striking details of the whole game. The music, for the first time, did not come from the series' longtime composer and took on a darker, more electronic tone.

Multiplayer underwent a major overhaul toward systems similar to Call of Duty, including character specializations and loadouts, which divided the fanbase; the cooperative content, meanwhile, offered the episodic Spartan Ops mode with missions released in installments. Even so, the game succeeded commercially, selling millions of units and confirming that Halo remains a key brand for Xbox. Its graphical presentation was among the best on the console overall, demonstrating just how far the Xbox 360's hardware could be pushed at the end of its life cycle. Halo 4 still sparks debate about the series' direction today, but as a technical and narrative achievement it remains a respected work of a transitional period.
