Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary celebrated the tenth anniversary of the original game, which kicked off the entire series and helped define console first-person shooters at the turn of the millennium. The story of the Master Chief fighting the alien Covenant and the mysterious Halo ring remained unchanged, but players could switch at any time between the original 2001 graphics and a completely reworked visual style — an unusual and highly praised feature at the time, letting players instantly compare the progress of graphics technology over a decade. The gameplay — more open level design, shield and grenade management, battles against the parasitic Flood — remained untouched and still felt fresh even ten years after the original release, when it had defined concepts like a regenerating shield or a two-weapon limit, both of which have since become genre standards.
On the Xbox 360, the remaster offered significantly improved models, lighting, and environmental effects, and also came with reworked sound and music by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, supplemented with new arrangements of classic themes familiar to fans from earlier series entries. Cooperative campaign play remained a key part of the experience, as did the ability to compare both versions with a single button press on the fly, which became a favorite way of showcasing technological progress between console generations.
At the time, the Anniversary edition was very well received as a respectful and technically accomplished tribute to the series' founding entry, further supplemented with exclusive multiplayer maps based on classic locations. Today, it remains for many players the most accessible way to play the original Halo — combining nostalgia for the classic design with more modern graphics — and it stays essential for anyone wanting to understand the roots of console shooters and the influence they had on the entire genre, from mission structure to storytelling through recorded logs and terminals.
Why play: For anyone wanting to understand the roots of console shooters, this remains the most accessible way to play the original Halo — combining nostalgia with more modern graphics.
