Bungie – obaly her studia

Bungie is one of those studios whose name became synonymous with an entire gaming platform — without Halo, the early history of Xbox would look completely different. It started out as a small independent team focused on Macintosh and gradually rose to become one of the most influential developers of action games of all time. Along the way it underwent a dramatic transformation: from an independent studio it became part of Microsoft, only to later become independent again and eventually end up under the wing of Sony. Its legacy, however, remains firmly tied to two great series that shaped the entire genre of first-person shooters and online multiplayer worlds alike — Halo and Destiny.

History

Bungie went through a long journey before it became a company associated with Xbox. It first focused on games for Macintosh and smaller titles, until the breakthrough came with the strategy series Myth, which showed that the studio could build distinctive game worlds and sophisticated multiplayer experiences. The real turning point, though, was the project Halo: Combat Evolved. The game, originally developed as a title for computers, ultimately became the flagship launch title of the first Xbox console and played a crucial role in helping Microsoft establish itself in the game console market. Shortly before Halo's release, Microsoft acquired Bungie, turning the studio into an internal division tied almost exclusively to a single platform and a single brand. More Halo installments followed, expanding the story, the multiplayer, and the technical capabilities of the engine, and cementing the series' position as one of the pillars of the Xbox ecosystem. After years of intensive work on Halo, Bungie split from Microsoft in 2007 and became independent again, though it continued collaborating on Halo for some time afterward. The studio then set itself a new goal — to build its own universe outside of Halo. The result was Destiny, an online shooter combining elements of MMO, RPG, and classic action, which Bungie published in partnership with publisher Activision. After that partnership ended, the studio went its own way with the sequel Destiny 2 and further development of the online service as a long-term project. Since its release, Destiny 2 has evolved through large paid expansions that gradually rewrote the game's map and even changed its core systems, turning it into a live service rather than a one-and-done release. This model, where a game keeps growing for years after launch, became the defining trait of the second half of the studio's history and set Bungie apart from its earlier identity as a creator of self-contained stories from the Halo era.

Key People

Among the people most often associated with Bungie is Jason Jones, one of the studio's founders, who was behind its early projects, including the Myth series, and later the very concept of Halo itself. Alongside him, the studio's early era is also tied to the name of Alex Seropian, another of its founding members. Marcus Lehto also played a long-term role in shaping the Halo series, serving as art director behind the visual look of the space soldier Master Chief, as did Joseph Staten, who for many years oversaw the series' narrative and writing. The precise personnel changes at the studio in later years, especially around the transition to Destiny, shifted so much over time that reliably documenting every additional name would go beyond the scope of this text.

Today

Today Bungie is an independent studio focused on the long-term development of Destiny 2 as a live service, with regular seasonal updates and larger expansions that gradually change the game world and its story. The studio has maintained its own production team and game engine throughout, one it originally built for Halo. In recent years Bungie became part of Sony, placing it among the key studios in the Japanese console maker's portfolio, though it continues to maintain its own identity, brand, and direction outside the traditional single-platform exclusives. Destiny 2 remains its main, and practically only, actively developed title, around which the vast majority of the studio's work is now focused.
